TRADER TRANSITS
Mars in Leo
As covered in our publication, When to Buy and When to Sell: Combining Easy Indicators, Charts, and Financial Astrology (available on Amazon), and our Planet Power – Mars, blog, dated 5-21-24, the planet Mars (ruler of Scorpio and Aries), normally spends about 1 ½ months positioned in a sign.
Mars, which represents aggressive, combative, and fighting spirit energies, and Leo (a fire sign ruled by the Sun), which symbolizes courage, creativity, and pride, makes for an interesting combo, where the strongest energies of this transit will likely surface. Mars in Cancer can be passive/aggressive and emotional, though Mars can really take charge in the sign of Leo, with confidence and conviction. Mars will exit the sign of Cancer, and enter the sign of Leo on Monday, September 28, lasting almost 2 months, through November 25, 2026. This transit will cover most of Libra season, all of Scorpio season (which it co-rules with Pluto), and the first few days of Sagittarius.
The last Mars/Leo transit, in the Spring of 2025, also lasted about 2 months, occurring in the signs of Taurus and Gemini, including a retrograde period, when the markets were just coming off cycle lows about 1 week earlier. During this transit, the S&P 500 gained a whopping 700 points (13%). This year, the transit will be also be slightly longer than usual (2 months), though there will be no retrograde period.
The Mars/Leo ingress in 2023 (in July and the first half of August) in Cancer and Leo, resulted in market cycle highs, followed by a reversal, which is very common. The S&P 500 rose about 3% in July, then fell about 1.7% in August during this transit and Mars initial entry into Virgo.
On this occasion, the ingress will occur during a seasonally strong period in the markets, but will be interrupted by the Mid-Term elections, Venus Retrograde, and Mercury Retrograde, which is sure to cause volatility into early November. The markets generally respond well after these elections, however, and both retrogrades end mid-month in November. The markets could pick up steam as we progress toward the holidays, however, another interest rate hike could derail a promising rally.
As we have discussed in the past, the themes of many transits and aspects tend to repeat themselves, and the energies can be felt for some time before and after the actual date of the event. With this transit, combined with Uranus now in Gemini, plenty of sharp reversals in equity markets, especially technology stocks, could occur. The commodities markets, which began another surge in Leo season, may also continue to see gains, as Leo represents gold.
The general belief among financial astrologers is that commodities, as well as stocks including financials, defense (including cybersecurity) will see strength, though seasonally strong retail may continue to lag.
