PLANET POWER
Eclipses
In this installment of “Planet Power,” we will discuss the mysterious entity known as an ECLIPSE. As mentioned in our new publication “When to Buy and When to Sell;” Combining Easy Indicators, Charts, and Financial Astrology (available on Amazon), and our Planet Power Moon Shine blog, dated 5-4-24, neither the Moon nor the Sun are technically identified as planets, as they rotate around the Earth, not the Sun. Both the Moon and Sun are referred to as luminaries, but to keep it simple, we include them in this basic category. The Moon is known to revolve around the earth once approximately every 29 days (which represents 1 month), while the Sun takes 1 full year (365 days). Since there are 12 signs/houses, the Moon passes through one about every 2.5 days, while the Sun requires approximately 30 days.
In Astrology, the Moon rules the sign of Cancer (home, family, sensitivity), which is the 4th house of the zodiac. The Moon symbolizes the mother, emotions, image, and protection, and the home. In the financial/business world, the Moon rules silver, female employees, the emotions of the market that create Fear and Greed, as well as the home building/improvement industries. It often signifies short-term cycle market tops during the new moon phase. The Moon can also signify additional market volatility, especially during aspects and transits that do the same.
What is an Eclipse? – Specifically, the definition of an eclipse is – an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer, or between it and its source of illumination. There are two main types of eclipses, including…
Solar Eclipse – occurs during the New Moon phase, when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, blocking all or part of the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth. Solar Eclipses can be total, partial, or annular (when the Moon is further away and does not block the entire Sun), depending on the exact alignment. The “blocking” creates a dark disk in front of the Sun, surrounded by a bright ring. The new position each month occurs when it is aligned with the Sun, which blocks out its light, making it “invisible” to the eye from the Earth’s perspective.
Lunar Eclipse – occurs during the Full Moon phase, when the Earth travels between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to be cast upon the Moon’s surface. The full position is when the Moon tends to “shine” as it is in the opposite position of the Sun, exposing its light and energies.
The upcoming Lunar Eclipse will take place on Sunday, September 7, 2025, with a full Moon positioned in the sign of Pisces (endings, dreams, mystery) while the Sun is positioned in the sign of Virgo (also referred to as Virgo “season”), which signifies perfection and organization. This will be followed by a Solar Eclipse, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, with the New Moon in Virgo, and the Sun in its last full day of Virgo.
The Eclipses have also resulted in stock market price action throughout time. Though there may be no scientific proof behind these theories, and no actual cause and effect, there is no arguing the facts and figures. Consider the following…
Historically, over 80% of Solar Eclipses (in New Moon periods), have resulted in gains in the stock market, and often these gains are larger than normal. Lunar Eclipse periods (Full Moon) are far more likely to suffer losses, though a trading strategy should not be based on these trends alone. Many other factors, including news, Fed policy, seasonality, and economic conditions, can add or subtract to the probability of these results. Keep in mind that there is an “orb” (or time frame) just before and after these events where the energies are prominent, not only on the specific date.
There are many professionals that utilize Eclipses and Moon phases and transits for day, and short-term, trading, although this concept is not widely revealed. One of the leading platforms, Trading View, currently has indicators built in, dedicated to both, complete with technical charts. There are many courses involving Moon trading as well, as this concept dates back to famous financial astrologer Louise McWhirter, the individual responsible for the theory of the North and South Nodes (of the Moon) business cycle, about a century ago. Please see our publication for more details.
There is also a general belief that individuals are more emotional during eclipse periods. This tends to spill over to decision-making, which extends to the stock market. Combined with the seasonal weakness, it tends to create FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt), which always leads to investor selling, at least for the short term. Whether this comes down to a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, this Eclipse “season” is sure to be interesting.
To summarize, the upcoming Eclipses would suggest some volatility (signified by Pisces) in the general markets in the seasonally weak period, with a potential boost in the silver and home building/improvement sectors. The prominent Virgo energies in these Eclipses also indicates that companies will be heavily scrutinized, and punished should they miss earnings expectations or provided weak future outlooks. Overall, the perceived volatility suggest smaller position size and mental stop losses for active traders.
