TRADER TRANSITS
Mercury conjunct Mars
As covered in our publication, When to Buy and When to Sell: Combining Easy Indicators, Charts, and Financial Astrology (available on Amazon), and a few Planet Power blogs, the planets Mercury and Mars play a significant role in the financial astrology arena.
Mercury, represents communications, transportation, and intelligence, while Mars symbolizes aggression, laser focus, and a full-speed ahead mentality. Both are currently transiting through the sign of Pisces, representing the 12th house of the zodiac, “ruled” by the planet Jupiter (which completes an approximate 6-month retrograde period on March 11). The 12th is not one of the 4 main financial houses, though it does symbolize endings, mystery, and delusion - traits that can be applied to the financial arena.
Mercury entered the sign of Pisces on February 6, and will remain an unusually long time (until Apr 14), due to its current retrograde period (Feb 26 - March 20). As discussed on many occasions, Mercury Retrograde is often a time of volatility in the financial markets, with pullbacks likely. This occasion has been no different, with wild fluctuations, and the VIX almost reaching 30 this past week.
The planet Mars entered the sign of Pisces on Monday, March 2 (through Apr 9), bringing with it more aggressive energies to a sign it is not compatible with. More fireworks are likely in the short term, with the global conflict (Mars), uncertainty/confusion (Pisces), and the current battle between what is real (structure) and what is not (delusion) (Saturn conjunct Neptune).
The previous Mercury conjunct Mars transit occurred twice this past Fall, on both October 20-21, 2025, then again on November 12-13, 2025, due to the last Mercury Retrograde (Nov 9 – Nov 29). During the former, markets remained calm, continuing their slow upward trajectory. On the second occasion, during the retrograde, markets slumped for 4 straight days, beginning on the 13th, with the S&P 500 losing over 200 points over that short span.
As we have also discussed in the past, the themes of many transits and aspects tend to repeat themselves, and the energies can be felt for some time before, and after, the actual date of an event.
The next Mercury/Mars conjunction will take place in about 1 week, on Sunday, March 15, 2026, in Pisces season, a date also identifying with the Ides of March from ancient Roman history. This event signifies brash, decisive behavior, and even death. In the general sense, be aware of the sharp-tongued, or pushy salesman types. In the financial world, be cautious not to be overconfident, over-aggressive, or feel invincible regarding trading activity, as deceptive practices may be heightened, whether known or unknown.
Historically, this conjunction has tended to lean slightly to the plus side in the equities markets, though not during Mercury Retrograde, which we are currently in the midst of. Stay cautious with the active planet transits.
The general belief among financial astrologers is that sectors including defense, real estate, energy, and commodities (especially gold) should be ones to watch.
